How to Reset Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Organization Members
Organization administrators and other authorized users can reset Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for members directly from the Manage Members table.
This feature allows you to quickly assist users who are locked out due to MFA issues, such as losing access to their authenticator app or device.
Who Can Reset MFA?
The Reset MFA action is only available to users whose role have access to manage the Manage Members page.
When Should You Reset MFA?
You may need to reset MFA when a member:
- Lost access to their authenticator app
- Changed or lost their mobile device
- Is unable to complete 2-Step Verification
- Is blocked from signing in due to MFA errors
Reset MFA for a Single Member
To reset MFA for one member:
- Go to Manage Members.
- Locate the member in the table.
- Open the action menu (⋮) for that member.
- Select Reset MFA.
- Review the confirmation modal.
- Click Confirm to proceed.
What Happens Next
- The system resets MFA for the selected member.
- A success or error message will appear based on the result.
- The member will need to reconfigure MFA on their next login (if required by your organization’s security settings).
Reset MFA for Multiple Members (Bulk Action)
You can reset MFA for multiple members at once.
To perform a bulk reset:
- Go to Manage Members.
- Select the checkbox next to each member.
- Click the Actions button.
- Choose Reset MFA.
- Review the confirmation modal carefully.
- Click Confirm to proceed.
Important
The confirmation modal clearly states that MFA will be reset for all selected members. This action cannot be undone.
After confirmation:
- MFA is reset for all selected members.
- The system displays success and/or error feedback for the operation.
Security and Permissions
The Reset MFA action is securely permission-gated:
- Only users with the appropriate role and permission can perform this action.
- All reset actions are subject to system security controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does resetting MFA delete the user account?
No. It only removes the existing MFA configuration.
Will the user be notified?
The user will be required to set up MFA again at their next login if MFA is enabled or enforced.
Can this action be undone?
No. Once MFA is reset, the user must complete MFA setup again.
What if the reset fails?
An error message will appear. If the issue persists, contact Optery Support.
